Who needs toys

Who needs toys?

If you’re a parent, you’ll know the feeling. It’s that time of year when you need to buy their Christmas present. In our experience there are two types of children when it comes to Christmas preferences. There is the laser guided type who have a really clear idea of what they want and if they don’t get it, well that will be Christmas ruined. Then there’s the impulsive type who changes their mind every five minutes. My own 4-year-old has asked for a whistle, a toy horse, a red sports car (I think he meant a toy one) and a new set of Paw Patrol figures and that’s just this week.

Once you’ve got an idea on what they want the next question is will they get bored of it after 5 minutes? Most of us with younger children have experienced that heart sinking moment on Christmas morning when you realise the present they really, really wanted is far less interesting than the box and wrapping paper which they are in the process of breaking up into small pieces across your living room floor.

Of course, you expect older kids to be least enthusiastic for a week or two. Ask yourself though, how many of the presents you bought your children last year are they still really enjoying now? Throwaway toys are just that. They give children a quick buzz before they are relegated to your attic or maybe even given as a gift for another children’s birthday party (be honest, have you?).

Of course, there is another way. Don’t buy them a toy! Buy them something that becomes part of their daily life. Something that stirs a passion. Something that gets them off their PlayStation and outdoors. Something that won’t be yesterday’s news tomorrow.

When Isla launched Islabikes back in 2006 she was laser guided on her objective. To produce children’s bikes (not toys) that kids love to ride and to get them into cycling for life. Thirteen years on and we know that thousands of children have caught the cycling bug having received an Islabike for Christmas.

An Islabike is an investment. We know our bikes aren’t cheap but loyal customers tell us they are worth every penny. Sometimes we hear from customers worried their children will grow out of their bike in no time. When a growing child is ready for their next sized bike, they should get at least a good two years out of it. When they outgrow it, you can hand it on to a younger sibling or sell it. Islabikes retain their value well because of their reputation and the fact they last. That is really important to us as a company striving to realise an environmentally sustainable business model. Throwaway consumerism is causing untold devastation, so it’s more important than ever to give presents that will bring years of pleasure.

The new generation of Islabikes are lighter than ever, have been meticulously designed for the needs of growing children and have some pretty cool colours and frame graphics to boot. Give a present that they’ll be loving next Christmas!
