20 Years of Islabikes
A Story of Innovation and Purpose

2005 - A new idea takes shape
Islabikes is founded. Isla designs a completely new range of children’s bikes, finds a manufacturing partner, secures premises and launches a pioneering direct‑to‑consumer model.
2006 - A quiet revolution begins
The first bikes go on sale. Despite costing twice as much as anything else for 4‑year‑olds, demand surges. Exceptional design, assembly quality and customer service fuel rapid growth across the UK and Europe, prompting two premises moves in four years.
2010 - Establishing a new standard
Islabikes matures into the leading name in premium children’s bikes, having created and defined the category.
2016 - 2014 - Pushing boundaries again
Isla steps aside as MD to launch the Imagine Project - an ambitious attempt to build circular‑economy bicycles and a service‑based supply model. Though ultimately ended in 2019 due to lack of funding, the concept proves influential: others later adopt similar service models.
2018 - Designing for overlooked riders
Drawing on her expertise in inclusive design, Isla creates a new range tailored to the changing physical needs of older riders.
2021 - Bikes for the Dwarf Sports community
After years of collaboration with the Dwarf Sports Association, Islabikes launches a UK‑manufactured range specifically designed for their riders - a milestone in thoughtful, human‑centred engineering.
2021 - A new chapter for Isla
Seeking a change from running a large organisation, Isla completes a management buyout, sells a majority share, and steps back to travel by bike and make artisan pizzas - while the business continues under new leadership.
2023 - A major reset, not an ending
Like much of the industry, Islabikes faces the pandemic hangover. Rather than sell to a trade buyer, Isla reacquires her shares and intentionally downsized the business. Mass production stops - but Islabikes does not. The same company continues, solvent and trading, focusing on supplying genuine spare parts, honouring guarantees, and completing a fork recall.
2025 - A small but mighty future
Islabikes announces that, alongside spare parts and accessories, it will occasionally release very small, one‑off batches of children’s bikes - keeping the expertise of Islabikes alive.
2026 - A new chapter, proudly local
Islabikes marks its 20th anniversary by unveiling a new, locally sourced bike at Bespoked - a small‑batch, thoughtfully designed model that reflects the company’s renewed focus on craftsmanship, sustainability and real‑world riding.
